This doesn't mean that you have to constantly be developing new techniques, strategies and sources of income. At least, you don't have to act on all of them. What it means is that you need to stay open to new opportunities. Never assume that the work that you're doing will always be there. Something could happen and a major source of your income could vanish into thin air. That won't be nearly as upsetting if you have continuously kept your ears perked up to new possibilities. You are under no obligation to act upon any new opportunities that you hear about – just don't close yourself off from them.

Be Willing to Learn

No matter what time of work that you do from home – be it writing, customer service, website development or sales – there's no such thing as being "done" with learning. If you decide that you know everything that you need to know, you're going to quit growing and learning. The second that happens is the second that your value as a freelancer begins to decline. There are always enthusiastic people out there who are more than willing to learn about new ideas and techniques. Don't let them steal away valuable opportunities from you!

You don't have to crack open a book or attend classes to learn more about your chosen field. One great way to stay on top of interesting topics is by checking in on popular blogs from time to time. Better still, get a Twitter account and follow as many relevant people as you can. They are sure to pass along interesting pieces, posts and articles that could prove to be quite valuable for you over the long run. Stay in touch with other work-from-home moms, too – in the forums, they will share their experiences, and you can learn a lot that way.

Go Out on a Limb

You need to be willing to go outside of your comfort zone from time to time if you want your work-from-home career to flourish. Just because you're mostly comfortable with writing about beauty topics, for example, doesn't mean that you should pass up opportunities to write about automotive or current events-related topics. Similarly, you may discover that many clients want virtual assistants who are well-versed in Excel or another program. You need to be willing to broaden your horizons if you want to keep expanding your reach as a freelancer.

Any time you're reluctant to try something new, consider this: What is the worst thing that could happen? More than likely, the worst thing that could happen would be disappointing a client. While that would be unfortunate, it wouldn't be because you didn't care. If you care enough and try hard enough, though, you probably won't even disappoint anyone. At worst, you might be told that there is room for improvement. A little constructive criticism is to be expected; in fact, you should welcome it. Before you know it, the thing that once seemed so daunting will be utterly simple.

Sign on and Try

There are plenty of great freelancing websites out there. Chances are that you've already tried your hand at popular ones like Textbroker, Demand Studios and Writer Access. If you check in regularly on popular forums, you're sure to hear about new opportunities. There is absolutely no harm in giving new websites a shot. Most of the time, they turn out to be dead-ends or just never get anywhere; every now and then, though, you could get in on the ground floor of an opportunity that will result in some very lucrative assignments.

You're going to hear a lot of talk about gathering as many "eggs" as possible when you read through popular work-from-home mom forums. That just means that you should try to sign up for as many different opportunities as possible. Over time, you should collect a nice little collection of "eggs" that you can juggle to pull in a nice, steady income. If one site is slow one week, a different one is sure to be hopping. If one company goes out of business, another one may be opening its doors. You won't know about any of it unless you're willing to sign on and give things a try.

The beautiful thing about being a work-from-home mom is that you can't be fired completely. One client might decide that you're just not a good fit for him, but that doesn't mean that your career is over. It just means that you need to move on and find yourself some new clients or eggs. If one opportunity doesn't pan out, you're sure to find another one that will. What works for one work-from-home mom might not work for another, so it pays to explore as many different opportunities as possible.
